Of Eyes and Ears

2 Corinthians 2:9 ‘Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love me’

If you are anything like me, you have seen, read or quoted this verse many times. I was listening to it in a song yesterday and something I listened to earlier in the week made me reflect on it so differently. Whenever I though or read this verse, I always thought ‘their’ eyes, ‘their ears’, those people who wish us ill. Other people have not seen or heard what God has in store for me….. that God will surprise ‘them’.

But earlier this week, I was listening to an online sermon where the preacher was talking about praying. About how to pray, about how to position yourself when you pray, literally and figuratively. She said some very practical things but in context to what I’m talking about here, she said, when you pray, it’s vital to come with an open heart and the full expectation that God will answer your prayer.

No matter what you are going through, come with the full hope, expectation and faith that the God who loves you unconditionally will answer you. And as I listened to this song, I wondered, what if it’s not just ‘them’ that haven’t seen or heard? What if its me as well? What if it’s my eye that hasn’t seen and my ear not heard? What if God is telling me that I haven’t yet seen or heard what He has in store for me if I fully give my life to him?

What if I need to open my heart, my mind, to more than I think I know, more than I have ever seen and more than I have ever heard? Do we expect God to do for us more than we have ever seen or imagined? When was the last time we prayed with the full  expectation that God will do more for us than even we can imagine? Or do we expect Him to give us what we ask for? What we have already seen and heard and think is what is the best for us?

I want to strive to pray and have the kind of faith that expects God will surprise me and do more than I have seen heard or imagined. What about you?
